Exploring The Many Types of Roses: An Expert Guide

Exploring The Many Types of Roses with Aubé Studios

Roses have long held a place of honour in the world of flowers, celebrated for their elegance, versatility, and symbolic depth. From expressing love and admiration to offering condolences, roses communicate profound emotions in ways words often cannot. At Aubé Studios, we consider roses an essential element of floral design, offering timeless beauty and endless creative potential. In this Floral Perspective article, we explore the different types of roses and their unique appeal.

A Bloom for Every Occasion

Roses come in an impressive array of varieties, each with its own character. Understanding these distinctions can help you choose the perfect arrangement for your occasion. Here’s a closer look at some of the most popular types of roses:

  1. Hybrid Tea Roses: Known for their classic shape and long stems, Hybrid Tea roses are often the go-to choice for romantic gestures. Their large, single blooms exude sophistication, making them ideal for standalone bouquets or as the focal point in an arrangement. Available in a wide spectrum of colors, from passionate reds to serene whites, these roses can fit any sentiment.

  2. Floribunda Roses: Floribunda roses are prized for their clusters of small to medium-sized blooms. Their vibrant colors and abundant flowers make them a lively addition to any arrangement. They’re perfect for creating a lush, full look that feels both playful and polished.

  3. Grandiflora Roses: Combining the elegance of Hybrid Tea roses with the abundance of Floribundas. Grandiflora roses offer a unique blend of form and function. Their larger clusters of blooms create a dramatic effect, making them a popular choice for statement pieces.

  4. Spray Roses: These petite beauties feature multiple blooms on a single stem, adding texture and volume to arrangements. Spray roses are perfect for filling out bouquets or creating delicate, whimsical designs. Their versatility and charm make them a favourite among floral designers.

  5. Garden Roses: Renowned for their old-world charm, Garden roses are lush and fragrant, often resembling peonies. Their intricate layers and soft petals evoke a sense of romance and nostalgia, making them an exquisite choice for weddings and special occasions. They’re a standout in any arrangement, bringing depth and texture to the composition.

Practical Tips for Choosing Roses

When selecting roses for your arrangement, consider the following tips to ensure they’re the perfect fit:

  • Color Matters: Each rose color carries a unique meaning. Red signifies love and passion, pink represents admiration and gratitude, white symbolizes purity, and yellow conveys friendship and joy. Think about the message you want to send when choosing your roses.
  • Scent Sensibility: Some roses, such as Garden roses, have a strong fragrance, while others are more subtle. Consider the recipient’s preferences when selecting fragrant blooms.
  • Longevity: Proper care can extend the life of your roses. Keep them in fresh water, trim the stems regularly, and remove any leaves below the waterline to maintain their beauty.

_______________

P.S. Our experts highly recommend reflexing your roses, which simply means gently folding the outer petals back to “open” the bloom. This practice creates a fuller, more dramatic, garden-rose look. It instantly adds volume, texture, and movement to your arrangement, making it feel more luxurious, modern, and intentionally styled (not tight or store-bought).

Steps to reflexing your roses:

  1. Remove any damaged guard petals.
  2. Starting from the outer layer, carefully bend each petal downward and outward at the base, working evenly around the bloom, one petal at a time.
  3. Once all petals are reflexed, place the bloom in your vase and start on the next stem.
